Advice Column By: Dear Dorcas

Dear Dorcas,

How can I control my talking? I always talk during class and get in trouble. My teachers put notes on my report card saying that I need more selfcontrol. What should I do?

-Widemouth

Dear Widemouth,

The first thing you need to do is ask yourself, why do I constantly talk in class? Is it because you have friends in that class who are always talking to you? If so, you probably should talk to your teacher about seating you away from your friends. Do you talk because you think class is boring? Try participating more, taking notes raising your hand to answer the question. But if you feel like you can't control your talking you might have an attention problem. If you're talking excessively and can't restrain yourself you probably should talk to your parents about seeing a doctor or talk to one of the guidance counselors here at school.

Yours Truly

-Dorcas

Dear Dorcas,

I have a new friend but that friend's best friend is mad that I'm spending time with that friend. What should I do?

-Worried Friend

Dear Worried,

Why are you, or your friend for that matter, letting some other friend tell you what to do? If you want to be friends, go ahead. Your new friend's best friend probably just feels threatened by you. Don't let your friend's friend, who's behaving like a six-year-old, get to you. Just treat this friend as you would anyone else. Just don't start any catfights.

Sincerely

-Dorcas
