Suicide currently is the 11th leading cause of death among all age groups in the United States, accounting for more than 30,000
deaths annually.
On January 1st, 2005, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services
Administration (SAMHSA) and Mental Health association of New York City launched the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
The Lifeline is a network of more than 100 certified crisis centers nationwide. People who are in emotional distress
or suicidal crisis can call at any tim, from anywhere in the Nation, to talk w/ a trained worker who will listen to and assist
callers in getting the help they need. Calls within the network are routed to an available crisis center closest to the caller,
provided callers with immediate access to local resources, referrals, and expertise.
