Games of the Month By: EGM

When I visited the Humane Society of Marathon County and I did my interview, it was quite obvious that this particular Humane Society was something special. The response to my first question amazed me the most. I asked how many months they keep the animals and they responded by saying they did not have a time limit at all! This triggered many other questions into my head that led to an abundant amount of answers and facts.

Our humane society takes in around 2,800 animals a year. The sad things is that two-thirds these are strays, and only one-third are surrendered from previous families. It’s sad to think that many animals walk around without homes. Also , out of that 2,800 two-thirds are cats, and only one-third is dogs. The reason why the cat population is so much higher is, because there is a lot of wild cats that are captured. Then, after being captured, are brought to the humane society. A national fact is that only 4-5% of the cats that come in as strays have people come in, and claim them. Currently , at the Humane Society of Marathon County there is around fifty dogs, and seventy cats. Cats and dogs aren’t the only animals they have; they also can have rodents, ferrets, pot-belly pigs, turtles, rabbits, and even cockatoos. The good news is that a majority of these animals will get adopted. Around 90% of dogs and 60% if cats are adopted. Part of it is becayse around 40% of cats can’t even be adopted. The reasons being that they could be wild, very sick, and/or don’t get along with people very well. This is the only time when animals are put to sleep. After talking about how many animals get adopted we moved on to talking about the adoption process. It starts with getting an adoption checklist, then filling out an adoption application, and profile. The reason there is a process is because they want to make sure the people and pet are a good match, and they have an appropriate pet for the amount of time and space they have. The Humane Society of Marathon County cares a lot about the life of all the animals they take in under their wing.

We are now going to go back to how they don’t have a time limit on how long they keep their animals. This truly is quite amazing since the cost for animals is very expensive. They don’t just have to pay for food, but for medical expenses too. This is hard to do with a budget; especially when medical bills and such some up to be around $60,000. This is why the humane society needs your help! All you need to do is donate the items that are on the Humane Society at Marathon County Wish List. This list will be posted in the English Resource room with a box where you can put your donated items in. Every Wednesday I will take that box to the humane society and drop off all the donated items. This is a great opportunity to help take care of animals that can’t take care of themselves. Do you part to help animals in you local community
